Business Credit for a Brand-New LLC With Zero History

Business Credit for a Brand-New LLC With Zero History — The Ledger by MidBank

A brand-new LLC starts with no business credit file at any bureau — that is the default state, not a problem to fix. Build it in order: get a free same-day EIN from the IRS, open a dedicated business bank account, request a free D-U-N-S Number from D&B (about 30 business days), then open 2–3 trade lines that actually report and pay them early. A usable file typically takes 90–180 days to form; there is no legitimate shortcut faster than that.

You just formed the LLC. The EIN letter is in your inbox. And when you check your business credit, there is nothing there — no score, no file, no history. That is not a problem with your business. It is the default state of every business on day one, and it is exactly where most owners give up or get talked into a shortcut that costs more than it saves.

This is the real order of operations for building a business credit file from zero: what has to happen first, what to ignore, and how long each step honestly takes.

Zero history is the norm, not a red flag

It can feel like every other business already has a file and yours is somehow behind. It is not. The U.S. Census Bureau's Business Formation Statistics show 496,443 seasonally adjusted business applications were filed in February 2026 alone, and of the applications filed in June 2026, the Bureau projects 29,741 will become employer businesses within four quarters. Every one of those businesses starts with the identical blank file yours has right now.

New businesses are formed by the hundreds of thousands — with zero credit file

Two separate 2026 monthly releases, seasonally adjusted. Every one of these filings begins with a business credit file that does not exist yet.

A blank file is not derogatory. It carries no negative marks and no risk flags — it is simply unscored, because none of the three major business bureaus (Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business, Equifax Business) have anything to report on yet. Lenders and vendors treat "no file" very differently from "bad file." Your job for the next 90–180 days is to give the bureaus something to score.

A blank business credit file is not a bad file. It is an unscored one — and unscored is a temporary condition you fix by acting, not by waiting.

Step 1: separate the business before you touch credit at all

None of the credit-building steps below work if the business and the owner are still financially tangled together. Do these first:

Consistency across every one of these — legal name, address, phone — is what lets a bureau confidently attach a new trade line to your file instead of leaving it orphaned or, worse, merging it into the wrong business.

Step 2: get your D-U-N-S Number

Dun & Bradstreet's D-U-N-S Number is the identifier your D&B file (and the PAYDEX score built from it) is organized around. D&B's own page confirms it is free to request, with a standard turnaround of roughly 30 business days. Paid expedite options exist and can shorten that to about 8 business days — but the number itself never costs anything, and no third party can sell you one faster than D&B can issue it directly. For the full breakdown of what is worth paying for and what is not, see our piece on what a D-U-N-S Number actually does.

Request it as early as you can stomach the 30-day wait — ideally the same week you get your EIN — because almost every trade line and financing application downstream references it.

Step 3: understand what "zero" means at each bureau

You do not have one business credit score. You have (at minimum) three separate bureau files, and a brand-new LLC starts blank at all of them simultaneously:

We cover how these three diverge in detail — and which one lenders actually pull — in Experian Intelliscore vs. PAYDEX vs. Equifax. The point for a brand-new LLC: you are not fixing a bad number at any of the three. You are creating the first data point each one needs to generate a number at all.

Step 4: open trade lines that actually report

This is where most new owners waste months. They open a net-30 account with a vendor, pay it on time, and assume it is building their file — only to discover a year later that the vendor never reported it anywhere. Not every net-30 account reports to a business bureau, and the ones that do rarely say so clearly on a marketing page.

We wrote a full, verify-don't-trust walkthrough of which vendor accounts genuinely report and how to confirm it yourself in net-30 vendor accounts that actually report to business bureaus. The short version for a zero-history LLC: open two to three reporting trade lines, keep the balances small and genuinely useful to the business, and pay early rather than merely on time — PAYDEX specifically rewards early payment, which we break down in PAYDEX explained.

What NOT to do

Skip anything marketed as a "credit privacy number," a synthetic identity shortcut, or a service promising an instant aged trade line. These are not shortcuts — they are the exact fraud patterns federal agencies actively pursue, and we cover the real numbers behind those schemes in business credit myths: shelf corporations, CPNs, and the frauds sold as shortcuts. A zero-history file that takes 90 days to build correctly is worth infinitely more than a fabricated one that collapses the first time an underwriter looks closely.

Step 5: expect a personal guarantee at first — that is normal, not a failure

Almost every lender and many vendors will ask a brand-new LLC's owner for a personal guarantee before extending meaningful credit, precisely because there is no business track record yet to underwrite against. That is not a sign your credit-building plan failed; it is the standard bridge every business crosses before its own file can stand on its own. We explain exactly what you are agreeing to, and how to eventually get released from it, in the personal guarantee.

A realistic timeline

TimeframeWhat should be true
Day 1Entity filed, EIN issued (same day online), dedicated business bank account opened, D-U-N-S Number requested.
Weeks 2–6D-U-N-S Number arrives (standard ~30 business days). First 2–3 reporting trade lines opened and used.
Months 2–3First on-time (ideally early) payments post to D&B; Experian and Equifax begin generating a score once enough tradeline or demographic data exists.
Months 4–6A thin but real file exists at all three bureaus. Small vendor credit lines and secured business credit products become realistically approvable.
Month 6+File is mature enough to support unsecured trade credit and, alongside strong financials, an SBA or bank conversation — though a personal guarantee typically still applies until the file has real depth.

Nothing here can be rushed by paying someone. The 30-business-day D-U-N-S timeline, the reporting cycles vendors run on, and the minimum data thresholds Experian and Equifax require are structural, not negotiable line items.

The takeaway

A brand-new LLC with zero credit history is not behind — it is exactly on schedule with every other business the Census Bureau counted this year. The path out of a blank file is mechanical and sequential: separate the business financially and legally, get the free identifiers (EIN same-day, D-U-N-S in about 30 business days), open trade lines that actually report, pay early rather than late, and expect a personal guarantee until the file has enough depth to stand alone. Skip the shortcuts sold as faster paths — none of them are actually faster, and several of them are federal fraud.

Questions business owners actually ask

Is it bad that my brand-new LLC has no business credit score at all?

No. A blank file carries no negative marks — it simply has not generated enough data yet. Experian, for example, requires at least one trade line or one demographic data element before it will calculate a score at all. Lenders and vendors distinguish clearly between “no file” and “bad file.”

How fast can I get a D-U-N-S Number for my new LLC?

D&B issues it free, with a standard turnaround of about 30 business days. A paid expedited option can shorten that to roughly 8 business days, but the number itself never has to be paid for — no third party can legitimately issue it faster than D&B.

Do I need an EIN before I can start building business credit?

Yes. The EIN is what lets a bureau attach a file to your business rather than to your Social Security Number. The IRS issues it free and immediately through its online EIN assistant — never pay a third party for one.

How many trade lines does a new LLC need to get a first business credit score?

As few as one, technically, for Experian to begin scoring. In practice, 2–3 trade lines that genuinely report, paid early rather than merely on time, build a usable file faster and reduce reliance on any single vendor's reporting habits.

Will I have to personally guarantee credit for a brand-new business?

Almost always at first, and that is normal rather than a sign of failure. Lenders and many vendors have no business track record to underwrite yet, so the owner's personal guarantee bridges that gap until the business file has enough independent history.

Are CPN or credit-privacy-number services a legitimate shortcut for a new LLC?

No. These are not legal shortcuts — they rely on fabricated or misused identifiers and match patterns federal agencies actively pursue as fraud. A properly built file that takes 90–180 days is the only real path.
