What a D-U-N-S Number Actually Does (and Why You Should Never Pay for One) — The Ledger by MidBank

A D-U-N-S Number is a free, nine-digit identifier Dun & Bradstreet assigns to your business to anchor its credit file, trade experiences, and PAYDEX score. You request it directly from D&B's own site at no cost, typically within 30 business days, or pay D&B itself for optional 8-day expedited processing. Third-party “DUNS registration services” charge $100–$300+ to fill out that same free form, and fake “renewal invoice” emails demanding payment are scams — D-U-N-S Numbers never expire. If you need a federal contracting identifier, SAM.gov now issues a free UEI instead, since D-U-N-S was retired from that system in April 2022.

A D-U-N-S Number is a free, nine-digit identifier that Dun & Bradstreet assigns to your business so its credit files, PAYDEX score, and trade experiences all attach to one consistent record. You request it directly from D&B at no charge. Nobody needs to sell you access to that form — and nothing you can pay for makes the number itself more real or more valid than the one D&B issues for free.

That last sentence is the whole reason this post exists. Search “get a DUNS number” and the paid listings above the real D&B result promise expedited registration, compliance guarantees, government-contracting readiness — for $100, $200, sometimes more. They are not lying about what they deliver. They are filling out the same free form you could fill out yourself, then charging you for the privilege.

What is a D-U-N-S Number, actually?

D-U-N-S stands for Data Universal Numbering System. Dun & Bradstreet's own page describes it as a unique nine-digit identifier assigned to a single business location, used to build and track that business's D&B file — the record that eventually houses your PAYDEX score and any trade experiences vendors report about how you pay your invoices. Think of it less as a credential and more as a mailing address: it is the fixed point every future piece of D&B data about your business gets filed under.

Without it, or with an inconsistent one, a supplier's on-time payment can land in a fragmented, half-built file instead of building toward a coherent score. That is the practical reason to get it early, not because any government agency, lender, or supplier requires you to pay for it.

Is a D-U-N-S Number actually free?

Yes, without qualification. D&B's own request page states it directly: “There is no cost to request and receive a D-U-N-S Number.” You provide your legal business name exactly as registered with your state, your address and phone number, your legal structure, founding year, primary industry, and the name of the owner, president, or CEO. A D&B representative may follow up to verify the details, and then the number is issued.

There is no version of this process where paying a stranger on the internet gets you a more legitimate D-U-N-S Number than the one D&B issues for free through its own form.

Every step here is free except D&B's own optional expedited-processing add-on.

How long does the free process actually take?

D&B states that in most cases you will receive your number within 30 business days through the standard, no-cost process. If your timeline is tighter — you have a contract deadline or a supplier waiting on the number — D&B itself offers an optional expedited-processing add-on for a fee, delivering the number in roughly eight business days. That is the only legitimate paid-speed option: it comes from D&B directly, on D&B's own site, not from a third-party reseller who has simply inserted themselves between you and the same form.

If a business can absorb the standard timeline, there is no functional difference between the free path and any paid “service” — both end in a D&B-issued number, and only one of them cost anything.

Why do paid “DUNS registration services” exist at all?

Because the request form is a little tedious, D&B's site does not always rank first for the exact phrase a confused business owner types in a hurry, and the fee feels small next to the anxiety of getting government paperwork or vendor credit wrong. None of that changes what is actually being sold: someone filling out a public, free intake form on your behalf and charging a markup for it.

D&B's own fraud page goes further and documents a second, meaner version of the same pattern: businesses receiving emails formatted like invoices for “D-U-N-S Number renewal.” D&B is explicit that these are not issued by Dun & Bradstreet and should not be paid — because D-U-N-S Numbers do not expire and never require renewal in the first place. D&B asks anyone who receives one of these to forward it to its security team rather than respond.

Do I still need a D-U-N-S Number for federal contracts, or is that UEI now?

This is where a lot of outdated advice lingers. As of April 4, 2022, the federal government stopped using the D-U-N-S Number for SAM.gov registration and replaced it with the Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), a 12-character code generated inside SAM.gov itself when you register. SBA's federal contracting guide confirms the change plainly: “Businesses no longer have to go to a third-party website to obtain their identifier (DUNS number)” before bidding on government work — the UEI is issued directly, for free, as part of SAM.gov registration.

So if your only reason for wanting a D-U-N-S Number is to bid on a federal contract, you do not need one at all anymore — you need a free UEI from SAM.gov, and a separate GSA fraud bulletin explicitly warns vendors that “registration in SAM.gov is always free” and that third parties charging for it, or contacting you demanding payment via gift cards or wire transfer, are running a scam, not a service.

Where the D-U-N-S Number still matters is entirely on the commercial side: it remains the identifier D&B uses to build your business credit file, calculate your PAYDEX score, and match trade experiences vendors report about you. UEI and D-U-N-S now serve two completely separate systems — one government, one commercial — and conflating them is exactly how a business ends up paying for something it does not need, or skipping something it does.

What does the D-U-N-S Number actually unlock once you have it?

None of that requires paying anyone beyond, at most, D&B's own optional expedite fee.

How to request your D-U-N-S Number the right way

  1. Go directly to D&B's own site — dnb.com/en-us/smb/duns/get-a-duns.html — rather than clicking a sponsored search result.
  2. Have your legal business name, exactly as filed with your state, along with your address, phone, structure, and owner information ready.
  3. Submit the free request. If your timeline allows 30 business days, pay nothing further.
  4. If you genuinely need it faster, use D&B's own optional expedited service rather than a third-party intermediary.
  5. Confirm your legal name, address, and identifiers are consistent everywhere you apply for financing or trade credit — see our fundability checklist for the full list of identity details lenders and vendors cross-check before extending anything.
  6. If you are building a credit file from zero and want a faster, more controlled path to reportable payment history once your D-U-N-S Number is issued, a credit builder product can establish trade history without waiting entirely on vendor net-terms.

The takeaway

A D-U-N-S Number costs nothing, expires never, and is requested through one page on D&B's own site. If you are bidding on a federal contract, you need a UEI from SAM.gov instead — also free. Every paid intermediary standing between you and either of those free forms is selling convenience at best and, per D&B's and GSA's own fraud warnings, running a scam at worst. Fill out the real form yourself, keep your business details consistent everywhere you use the number, and put the money you would have spent on a “DUNS service” toward something that actually builds your file — reportable trade lines.

Questions business owners actually ask

Is a D-U-N-S Number really free, or is there a catch?

It is genuinely free. Dun & Bradstreet's own request page states there is no cost to request and receive a D-U-N-S Number. The only legitimate paid option is D&B's own optional expedited-processing add-on, which shortens the roughly 30-business-day standard timeline to about eight business days for a fee — and even that is optional, not required.

Do I need a D-U-N-S Number to register in SAM.gov for federal contracts?

No. As of April 4, 2022, SAM.gov replaced the D-U-N-S Number with the Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), which is generated automatically and free when you register directly with SAM.gov. SBA's federal contracting guide confirms businesses no longer need to go to a third-party site to obtain that identifier.

Why do some websites charge $100–$300 to get me a D-U-N-S Number?

They are filling out the same free public request form on your behalf and charging a markup for the convenience. It is not illegal to charge for that service, but it is not necessary either — the identical result is available directly from D&B at no cost.

I received an email asking me to pay to renew my D-U-N-S Number. Is that real?

No. Dun & Bradstreet states plainly that D-U-N-S Numbers do not expire and do not need to be renewed, and that fake renewal-invoice emails are not issued by D&B. D&B asks recipients to forward suspicious emails to its security team rather than pay or respond.

Does a D-U-N-S Number affect my PAYDEX score?

Indirectly, yes — it is the identifier D&B's system uses to attach trade experiences and build your business credit file, and PAYDEX is calculated from those reported trade experiences. Getting the number does not create a score by itself; reported, paid trade lines do.

What information does D&B ask for when I request a D-U-N-S Number?

Your legal business name exactly as registered with your state, physical address and phone number, legal structure, year founded, primary industry, and the name of the business's owner, president, or CEO. A D&B representative may contact you to verify these details before issuing the number.
